If I had the supernatural ability to arbitrarily state desired outcomes and magically instantiate them into reality, why, anything imaginable would be possible! Once you remove those pesky requirements for “physical possibility” and “practical feasibility” everything gets so much easier!
Ignoring the typical “altruistic person with a genie” subset of things such as eternal youth for everyone, world peace, no more poverty, etc. here are a few examples that might be preferable to the world we live in1:
Note that I’m *not* saying these are all actually good ideas as stated/taken literally/taken to the extreme/etc, only that I find them appealing at face value. I’m anticipating some of these would have bad consequences I didn’t consider.
All debates take place in a self-imposed ‘emotion-regulated’ state of mind such that nobody becomes upset to the degree they are incapable of engaging in good faith with opposing viewpoints.2
All debates are recorded, annotated, and when a new one occurs with >95%3 similarity to ongoing or resolved disputes all participants are required to pause and familiarize themselves with the existing ones before continuing4, and then must tread new ground rather than rehashing existing points. Otherwise the participants are free to emphatically shout the relevant reference numbers to whichever talking points they endorse most strongly before moving on with their day.5
Anyone who realizes they are wrong must immediately admit such and stop advocating for whatever they were wrong about.6
If a public figure is found to have deliberately mislead the public about any consequential fact Z, this is immediately broadcast in all relevant information channels and all laws/rulings/regulations/etc that were made using Z as a justification are re-evaluated in light of the new information
(While we’re at it I would be tempted to also eliminate deception in general but there are some edge cases where it is the right thing to do.)Prior to being able to post about any scientific/highly technical topic on a public medium, individuals will be required to actually familiarize themselves with the source info of whatever they are trying to say (as opposed to parroting rumors and talking points). (Obviously this would be very difficult to do in a robust and ethical way in real life.)
This is not attempting to require everyone to be an expert about something in order to publish opinions about it, merely stop people from spreading total nonsense like “5G is a plot to microwave everyone!” despite the trivial ease of:Looking up the technical specifications of a few of the actually-in-use 5G transmitters and
Seeing that the power throughput is nowhere near sufficient to do anything resembling what scaremongers are claiming.
In the same vein as the previous, every public claim of factual information must cite its source/s (even if the source is “I was there, I saw it happen”)
I’m attempting to stick to things that we could more or less plausibly achieve to some degree via mundane means in the near future if we were collectively determined to do so. Most of which in practice are nearly impossible for various practical reasons.
Yes I do in fact think this is technically possible to achieve at least partially, as there are individuals for whom and settings in which this is the norm. Since it can happen in some limited circumstances, why could it not be the case most of the time if everyone knew how and there were broad cultural norms enforcing it? (Certainly, those are herculean asks and I don’t expect them to be realistic in the forseeable future.)
Or whatever arbitrary threshold of subjective similarity
I am regularly guilty of failing to do this. Often it is because I have simply never been exposed to the settings/writings in which the relevant material appears. Predictably, I try re-deriving existing ideas from scratch like many of the young & frequently naive.
Requiring that proposals be practical and possible to enforce ruins so many amazing ideas!
Sadly impossible to enforce unless you have a telepath handy.
I really enjoyed reading this newsletter. You have got such a thoughtful way of presenting ideas. If you get a chance, I’d love for you to check out my newsletter sometime as well. Always appreciate supportive feedback from fellow writers.
